I woke up yesterday with this verse of Scripture flashing through my spirit…WOW! “And the God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) be with you.” Romans 16:20 AMPC
What a great promise! We’d all like to take this verse out of context and dip it into the bitter, muddy waters of 2020 and 2021 (and it would be ok to do that), but there’s a frame of reference in the preceding verse. Loyalty and obedience on the part of the Roman believers was evident and commendable, but Paul (or whoever you think the writer of Romans is) gives them further instruction on how to live in victory. Here’s that scripture from one of my new favorite translations of the Bible…
“I’m so happy when I think of you, because everyone knows the testimony of your deep commitment of faith. So I want you to become scholars of all that is good and beautiful, and stay pure and innocent when it comes to evil. And the God of peace will swiftly pound Satan to a pulp under your feet! And the wonderful favor of our Lord Jesus will surround you.” Romans 16:19-20 TPT
Lastly…and this simply makes me feel like giant in God. Verse 20 refers to the God of Peace; ponder that for a second, especially if you’ve experiencing some turmoil right now. This God will soon…in a short while (when we mix into our lives some obedience, wisdom, knowledge of evil and live without guile) CRUSH satan UNDER OUR feet…and supply us with GRACE to empower us in the process!
Ok so the word crush. Nice in itself, but how’s this. The original Greek word suntribó – ‘soon-tree’-bo’ is a compound word. First part ‘sun’ is a proposition meaning with or together, and the second part of the word ‘tribos’ describes a worn and beaten path. Have you ever seen an unfortunate road-kill animal and then seen that same poor creature a day or two later? That’s the picture you need to have of satan, beaten up to a jelly or pulp.
